In a post on the PlayStation Blog, SCEA president Shawn Layden apologized for his E3 2014 tease, when he took the stage at Sony's PlayStation press conference to wax nostalgic about Vib-Ribbon.

Vib ribbon psn series#
I can always enjoy the pure Vib Ribbon experience on PS3, but it feels like a tease for what the series could be if it were rebooted.Cult classic musical platformer Vib-Ribbon is finally coming to North America for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today.
Vib ribbon psn Ps4#
The PS4 Camera and Vita’s camera could also be used to implement the photo-import feature seen in the 2004 sequel Vib Ripple.Īt the end of the day, I’m perfectly content with a handful of tracks in the Vita version to show off the concept to my friends. It would be interesting to see Vibri respond touch gestures or motion controls, perhaps shaking the Vita/Dualshock 4 to overcome on-screen obstacles. The PS4 and PS Vita both offer unique hardware, notably a touchpad and touch-screen respectively. Maybe a new entry to the series could be a download-only title priced for today’s market, sans the freemium model. As horrific as it sounds, it’s not hard to imagine failing a level and seeing a popup offering a pack of five hearts for 99¢.Ī modern Vib Ribbon wouldn’t be all bad, though. Alternatively, Vib Ribbon 2014 could allow users to import their own MP3s, and instead limit the number of attempts they get on each level. It’s likely that the constraint on a modern Vib Ribbon’s gameplay would be the number of tracks available to the user, which is the complete antithesis of the original game’s underlying philosophy: a level count limited only by your own CD collection. It’s not unheard of to see microtransaction-supported titles on the system. Some are ports of games which saw success on iOS, like Jetpack Joyride, and others are exclusive to the Vita, like Destiny of Spirits. There are plenty of freemium games already on Vita. Such limited content in the base game is actually what makes money these days in iOS “freemium” hits, and this is definitely the category in which Vib Ribbon would find itself today: a game that’s free to download, but severely restricted in terms of gameplay unless players utilize microtransactions, or in-app purchases. It’s noble that Sony preserved the game as a PSOne Classic in the US, but perplexing that a digital music solution wasn’t offered for today’s gamers. The feature is still intact on PS3, but try as you might, you won’t get Vibri to suffer through your favorite Nickelback album on Vita.
Vib ribbon psn full#
Without the ability to import audio CDs, Vib Ribbon is more of a skeleton than a full game, and this is painfully obvious in the PS Vita version of the recent PSN port. It’s so crazy, in fact, that it would be nigh-impossible for sony to launch it as a retail game in today’s market – at least, not in its original form. From the simplistic art style to the ambitious concept, it’s difficult to imagine how it even came to life in 1999.
